Serial Fiction

I'm pondering.

I'm pondering whether publishing something on this blog - something that can easily be broken down into fairly short, episodic, pieces - would be worthwhile, and creaate any interest or increased traffic whatsoever.

Comments and suggestions welcomed.

Well I don't know about increased traffic. I suppose if you asked anyone who was reading it to link to it. But I'd like if you did.
Do you want reader comments, or just links?

Either way, I'd be interested in reading.

That would be cool, but keep in mind that some places consider blog postings "published" and therefore won't buy it. So you'd probably have to use something you weren't planning on submitting. Maybe short stories or vignettes that fill the gaps between your published serial stories?

Or what about posting excerpts instead?

I like the excerpt idea, Brian. Maybe with some character vignettes that you definitely will not need in the final. It would be fun to read, for sure.
do you what you feel like doing, is my opinion. If you want to publish the pieces, and want to generate some interest now, perhaps only snippets or place them under a lock.

otherwise, if just for fun, why not? is what I'm going to do. As for increased traffic - eh, I don't know, Brian, I really don't.
I think you'd have the interest of the people already here, people who know you or have an interest in you, but new people, new traffic?
it would work for Cory Docotorow, but he's, you know, Doctorow. With BoingBoing behind him. And published novels, and shorts in Year's bests, and a history.

I'd advise against posting stories with that idea in mind (yes, it has worked before, for a very small handful of people), the odds are against it working.
On the other hand, if you do it for your own pleasure and the amusement of your current friends, in time as your career continues to grow it could become a nice little extra for the interested who might come to look for you. The silent, curious masses you never know might be lurking.
But that's a nebulous concept, and too unpredictable - do it for yourself and your friends. Let the rest take care of itself.
David said it better than I would have :)
I'm with him.
I was going to do a similar thing a while back, but I was too lazy. :-D

I agree with what david_de_beer said too - I wouldn't rely on it as a source of advertising, but if it's going to be just a bit of fun, then there's no harm as long as you use things you don't intend to publish.
